This is due to an increase in risks and the number of attacks on ships
January 30 2024

The attractiveness of working on maritime vessels in the world has been declining throughout the year. As stated in the “Mission for Seafarers” message, the ‘Seafarers Happiness Index’ for the fourth quarter of 2023 amounted to 6.36 points (with a maximum value of 10 points, meaning complete satisfaction), while in the first quarter the same year it was 7.1 points.
Reasons for the index decline include growing risks to shipping safety, inequalities in working conditions on different ships and companies, social isolation, declining incomes, insufficient social support and poor access to health care.
It should be noted that in 2023 freight rates for maritime container transportation decreased, and carriers used to reduce costs by optimizing expenses, including personnel costs. Growing geopolitical tensions and longer ship transits may also have a negative impact on the attractiveness of the profession.
