The container ship “Mikhail Robkanov” joined the fleet of the Kamchatka Shipping Company. Details were reported on August 21 by the government of the Kamchatka Territory.
The container ship will operate on the line between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Vladivostok. The vessel is named after the honorary veteran port worker, Honorary Citizen of Vladivostok, and honorary President of JSC “Vladivostok Commercial Sea Port” Mikhail Fedorovich Robkanov.
The ceremony was attended by Andrey Zdetovetsky, Minister of Fisheries of the Kamchatka Territory, Dmitry Korostelev, Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Kamchatka Territory, and Dmitry Domrachev, President of the Kamchatka Shipping Company LLC. Mikhail Robkanov also visited Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky personally to participate in the ceremony of naming a container ship after him. The container ship “Mikhail Robkanov” was built in Japan in 2008. The vessel is 145.1 m long, 22.4 m wide, has a deadweight of 12,561 tons, a total container capacity of 907 TEU, and a crew of 20.

Ambivalent feelings about this news. On the one hand, the launch of a regular container line connecting two major seaports in the Far East of Russia is a useful and necessary thing. On the other hand, renaming a ship that has been sailing the seas for 15 years in honor of a now living person, moreover, known for his merits not in Kamchatka, but in Vladivostok, where Mikhail Robkanov successfully headed the commercial seaport for many years … all this is somehow weird.
