COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Shipyard No. 1 (Yangzhou, China) hosted a launching ceremony for an electric container ship (serial number 997), which is being built for COSCO Shipping Development, according to the “Maritime Executive” portal.
The capacity of the new containership with electric propulsion is 700 TEU.
The company plans to use such electric-only vessels for domestic river transportation.
The construction of the ship began in March 2023, sea trials are scheduled for September this year. The company plans to use this vessel on the Yangtze River along a 965 km route.

It was noted that a series of small electric containerships is a key project for COSCO Shipping Development as part of the campaign to ensure green shipping.
The vessel powered by container batteries is a river or coastal vessel with a deadweight of 10 thousand tons, a length of 119.8 m, a structural beam of 23.6 m, a design draft of 5.5 m powered by two 900 kW main electric motors.
Compared to similar ships running on conventional fossil fuel, carbon emissions per day of operation can be reduced by 32 tonnes.
