The large-capacity LNG carrier Alexey Kosygin departed the bay of Bolshoy Kamen and embarked on its maiden voyage along the Northern Sea Route to work on the Arctic LNG 2 project, according to the press service of Sovcomflot.

The Alexey Kosygin is the lead vessel in a series of new-generation Arctic LNG carriers being built at the Zvezda Shipyard (Primorsky Krai). It is the first LNG carrier built in Russia.

“The design of the Alexey Kosygin LNG carrier was developed based on the unique experience of operating the Christophe de Margerie series of LNG carriers in challenging Arctic climate. Its improved ice-resistant hull, high ice class Arc7, and modern technical solutions ensure the vessel can safely operate in low temperatures without ice thickness restrictions, enabling it to transport LNG year-round along the Northern Sea Route from areas with the most severe ice conditions,” the statement reads.

The LNG carrier is equipped with three powerful 15 MW azimuth thrusters, which are key elements of its ice propulsion system. The vessel’s cargo capacity is 172,600 cubic meters. The Alexey Kosygin uses environmentally friendly LNG as its primary fuel.

The vessel is operated under the Russian Federation flag and is homeported in St. Petersburg. The crew consists of 29 Russian sailors. The vessel’s technical specifications include: length – 300 meters, width – 48.8 meters, ice class – Arc7, and propulsion power – 45 MW (three full-rotation azimuth thrusters, 15 MW each).

The Alexey Kosygin represents a new generation of Arctic cargo vessels, which will play a key role in achieving the crucial national objective of ensuring year-round navigation along the entire Northern Sea Route.

The vessel is named in honor of Alexei Kosygin, a prominent statesman who was at the forefront of Sovcomflot’s founding. Today Sovcomflot Group is Russia’s largest shipping company and one of the world’s leaders in the maritime transportation of oil and gas and servicing of offshore hydrocarbon production.
