There has been a particular increase in the volume of transit container cargo

The current volume of shipping along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in 2025 is at the same level as the record high of 2024, but several indicators have exceeded those of the previous year. This was stated by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, at the keel-laying ceremony for the new nuclear icebreaker Stalingrad, as reported by PortNews.
“There are many new achievements. First of all, this is a record for transit shipments, which reached 3.2 million tons. We’ve seen particular growth in the volume of transit container cargo. There have already been 23 international voyages, which is 1.5 times more than in all of 2024. And container cargo tonnage has increased 2.6-fold, reaching a record 400,000 tons,” the corporation’s head said.
Alexey Likhachev also recalled the launch of the first-ever international regular container transit service in the history of the NSR: in September of this year, a container voyage departed from the Chinese port of Ningbo across the Arctic, calling at ports in European countries.
“Not only China, but also other countries in the region are considering launching such international services next year. We hope for a significant, I would even say, orderly, increase in such services,” Alexey Likhachev added later in a conversation with journalists.
As previously reported by PortNews, a vessel belonging to the Russian company Aurora Line transited the NSR as part of a liner container service between St. Petersburg and China.
