The shipbuilding company Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding (part of the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation) has delivered to the customer the first “smart” long-distance research vessel in China. This was reported by the CGTN news channel.
Tongji became the first research vessel certified according to the intelligent standards of the China Classification Society. It is equipped with an autonomous navigation system, intelligent energy efficiency management systems, as well as an integrated digital platform. The engine room operates in a fully automatic mode.
The vessel was built for Shanghai Tongji University and will become a platform for marine scientific expeditions and practical training of students. The length of the research vessel is 82 m, the width is 15 m, the displacement is 2.5 thousand tons, the capacity is 15 crew members and 30 researchers. The vessel is capable of traveling up to 8 thousand nautical miles without refueling, and is equipped with a diesel-electric plant. There is a laboratory area of 320 square meters on board.
Tongji passed sea trials in May 2025, and in August of this year it will set off on its maiden voyage to the South China Sea.
