Khabarovsk river port seems to be the most promising for cargo accumulation

The Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot) plans to develop a cargo transport and handling complex based on the Khabarovsk river port, which will allow more active use of the transit potential of river waterways and will provide an opportunity to transport cargo in large quantities along the border between Russia and China. This was discussed at the session “Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island: a new vector for the development of cross-border cooperation” within the framework of the Russian-Chinese forum in Khabarovsk.
According to Mr. Andrei Tarasenko, the head of ‘Rosmorrechflot’, Russia and China are faced with the task of further strengthening relations in the field of transport and logistics, development of infrastructure, key port zones along the common border. At the same time, he noted the potential of river transportation.
Andrei Tarasenko:
— We must use all capacity of the Amur River which connects one third of the country. We do not use its capacity. Previously, cargo turnover exceeded 30 million tons, the river was used completely. We propose to restore this business, improve the indicators, both in cargo turnover and in passenger turnover. That is, to find such a relationship so that Chinese ships call at us, our ships call at China river ports. The depth of the river allows this to be done, the river is full-flowing.
According to Andrey Tarasenko, various cargoes and empty containers can be transported along the Amur River, on condition that new cargo transport and handling facilities are constructed there. Dzhalinda (Amur Region), Nizhneleninskoye (Jewish Autonomous Region) and the existing Khabarovsk River Port are considered the most promising sites for creating such multimodal logistics facilities. At the same time, Mr. Tarasenko considers the Khabarovsk River Port as the most promising, since it will accumulate cargo that can go both to China and to the ocean through coastal ports, such as Nikolaevsk-on-Amur.
‘Rosmorrechflot’ began work on creating cargo transport and handling facilities based on river ports to integrate water and land transportation in 2024. To increase the volume of cargo transportation along the Amur River, a cooperation agreement was signed with the government of Khabarovsk Territory on the development of logistics facilities in the region’s river ports.
