US President Donald Trump said that the United States intends to order the construction of 48 icebreakers. He said this during a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“We have ordered, we are in the process of ordering 48 icebreakers,” Trump said.

President also noted that Canada is interested in whether it will be able to use these icebreakers. “Canada wants to know whether they will be able to use them. I said, “Well, you have to pay for it,” the president said.

“If you are a sovereign country, you should have your own icebreaker. Russia, as you know, has about 40. We have only one large icebreaker. However, this whole area is becoming very important. <…> Sure, we must have protection,” the American leader added.
