Nuclear-powered ships operating on the Northern Sea Route are equipped with drones with dispersant spraying mechanisms

The crew of the Ural nuclear icebreaker (FSUE Atomflot), which went on duty in the waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), was staffed with two rescue operators of unmanned aerial vehicles of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Morspasluzhba. This was reported by the press service of the institution.
In order to strengthen emergency response readiness to eliminate oil spills in the NSR waters, five tons of dispersant and three drones equipped with dispersant spraying mechanisms have been placed on board the nuclear icebreaker.
The main task of the rescue drone operators will be to monitor the environmental situation in the waters of the NSR and to spray dispersant in the case of emergency.
This is provided for by a tripartite agreement between the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Morresluzhba”, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Atomflot” and the Federal State Budgetary Institution “GlavSevmorput”, which involves the joint organization of work to localize and eliminate oil and oil product spills.
The amount of bulk dispersant “Dimex” (five tons) on board the Ural nuclear icebreaker was determined in accordance with the research “Strengthening the readiness to eliminate oil and oil product spills in the waters of the Northern Sea Route with the involvement of nuclear icebreakers and the use of dispersants from unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia. Development of measures to reduce the risks of accidents associated with oil and oil product spills in the waters of the NSR.»
Now it is planned to similarly equip all nuclear icebreakers operated by FSUE Atomflot in the NSR waters. In addition, the placement of dispersant, UAVs and rescue operators is also planned on the vessels of the Marine Rescue Service operating in the Northern Sea Route waters.
