The Transport Minister reported to the Russian President on the progress of delivering containers with imported cargo
October 30 2024
The Far East sea terminals are currently 79% full, while rear terminals are 59% loaded. Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit reported this to President Vladimir Putin. The abstract of his report was published on the Russian government’s Telegram channel.
Mr. Starovoit reported to the head of state on the progress of transporting containers with imported cargo from Far East ports. According to him, 11 container trains depart daily. In total, 905 000 TEU were delivered from January-September 2024 (+4.5% compared to the same period last year). In September-October 2024, the daily transportation rate increased by 14% compared to August and amounted to 3,817 containers on average per day. As a result, the number of imported containers in storage at seaports decreased by 13%.
He also noted the interest of investors in this area: they continue to develop the capacities of dry ports in the Far East and in the regions of cargo destination.
In addition, the minister named the 20.7% discount provided by “Russian Railways” for transportation in gondola cars as factors that positively influence the situation with the loading of Far Eastern ports. It will continue to be in effect in 2025. The federal law on seaports has also been updated. Now, when forming the daily schedule for the placement and movement of vessels, port captains take into account information about the excess of the terminal load.
Recall that in 2022, due to the reorientation of cargo flows, Russian ports in the Far East faced an overload of their capacities. As a result, the Ministry of Transport, together with “Russian Railways”, created a headquarters to organize the transportation of containers from seaports in the Far East. In March 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the problem of overstocking of Far Eastern ports had been resolved.
