Not a single emergency has been registered on the Arctic route since the re-establishment of the GlavSevMorPut’

2 603 ship voyages have been completed along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in two years, more than 2.3 thousand icebreaker escorts organized, and about 2.4 thousand navigation permits issued under the direct control of GlavSevMorPut’ (Federal State Budgetary Institution, part of the “Rosatom” state corporation). This was reported by the “Rosatom” press service.
GlavSevMorPut’ institution, re-established on August 1, 2022, summed up the results of two years of its activities. Like its historical predecessor, the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route, the institution was tasked with creating safe conditions for shipping in the waters along the Arctic route, including overseeing the issuance of permits for ship navigation, monitoring vessel traffic and providing icebreaker assistance.
In particular, specialists from the Headquarters of NSR Marine Operations developed a deep-water route that allowed Capesize-class vessels to transit the NSR waters for the first time in history. In addition, the department of licensing activities of the institution introduced a mechanism for submitting applications for vessel navigation along the NSR through the “State Services” (“GosUslugi”) portal.
As “Rosatom” notes, “there has not been a single emergency on the NSR in two years, which has increased the attractiveness of the Northern Sea Route for commercial shipping.”
“The number of customers for our information and navigation support services for voyages in the NSR waters has almost doubled in two years. If in 2023 we had 9 contracts with customers, then in 2024 there will be 16, and their number continues to increase,” said Mr. Sergey Zybko, GlavSevMorPut’ General Director.
Recall that the NSR is defined as one of the strategic priorities for the development of Russia. It is the shortest sea route between the European part of Russia and the Far East: the length of the route from the Kara Gate to Providence Bay is about 5.6 thousand km.
According to the plan, the annual cargo flow along the NSR should amount to 150 million tons in 2030, and 220 million tons in 2035. Cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route in 2023 amounted to 36.25 million tons, international transit transportation exceeded 2 million tons.
