They will deliver personnel, property and equipment from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the islands of the Kuril chain

Ships and vessels of the Russian Pacific Fleet will ensure the transportation of participants of the “Eastern Bastion – Kuril Ridge” expedition (organized by the Russian Geographical Society, RGS) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the islands of the Kuril Ridge and will take part in its activities. This was reported by the press service of the Eastern Military District.

The large amphibious ship “Oslyabya”, hydrographic vessels “GS-199”, “GS-44”, “Alexander Rogotsky” and a cable vessel “KIL-168” were allocated for the delivery of personnel, property and equipment. Pacific Fleet personnel and employees together with R$GS members, scientists and volunteers, will continue the ongoing field research started in previous years. A number of hydrographic studies will also be carried out.

The RGS participants have already arrived in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and in the coming days will begin loading the expedition cargo onto ships that will head for the islands of the Kuril ridge.

According to the Russian Geographical Society, the expedition’s plans for 2024 include, in particular, conducting comprehensive studies of the Great Kuril Ridge from the Iturup Island to Matua Island, assessment of marine pollution, search for relics of military-technical history.
