The interaction will concern the issues of navigation along the Northern Sea Route

The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) of Russia and the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research of the Ministry of Geosciences of India entered into a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of scientific research and logistics in the Polar Regions. The document was signed during the official visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow, reports the AARI press service.
“Russian and Indian polar explorers have a long history of partnership in Antarctica: our research stations are located in close proximity to each other, we provide mutual assistance and support in terms of logistics, without which it is almost impossible to work at the poles. The new document gives us the opportunity to extend our work to the Arctic region, the prospects of which are obvious to everyone today. Our colleagues from India are interested in climate change issues, our experience in studying permafrost thawing is a problem that India faces in the Himalayas, as well as the development of navigation along the Northern Sea Route, which in the coming decades will become a major global transport and logistics route,” commented AARI Director Alexander Makarov.
The nearest project in which Russian and Indian scientists will carry out joint scientific work will be the Russian-Brazilian expedition. Its launch is scheduled for autumn 2024. Scientists are also discussing the possibility of creating an international team for research in the Arctic on a unique Russian scientific vessel – the ice-resistant North Pole platform.
