This is the first time pirates have been detained for trial in over 10 years

35 people accused of seizing the ship MV Ruen (flag of Malta) with hostages in December 2023 were delivered to Mumbai (India) on the Indian destroyer Kolkata, Al Jazeera reports. The ship with 17 hostages was freed by Indian special forces on March 17, 2024, 480 km off the coast of Somalia.

Previously, Somali pirates were simply disarmed and abandoned. They have been brought in for trial for the first time in more than 10 years. Under Indian law, defendants can be sentenced to death if found guilty of murder or attempted murder, or to life imprisonment for piracy itself.
